Fat over lean really refers to the ratio of oil in the paint mixture. So, the oil is the fat. I thin my paint down with odorless mineral spirits when I begin. Then I transition to no additional mineral spirits, which means the ratio of oil in the paint is higher. I think that it easier to think: thin to thick and dark to light. As I paint ‘alla prima’ in one sitting, mostly the principle doesn’t matter so much to me, however, if I’m ever adding a detail layer on top of a base layer, I need to ensure the ‘fat’, more oily, paint goes on top of the ‘lean’, less oily, layers.
